As you may have already seen social media reports indicating an increase in respiratory illnesses in northern China, particularly among children, we wish to keep you informed on the real facts. Chinese health authorities confirm that these cases are due to common viruses such as influenza, respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), and human metapneumovirus (HMPV). Importantly, no new or unusual pathogens have been detected.
The WHO has stated that the situation is not unexpected and is similar to patterns observed in other countries. Chinese officials assure that the current wave is less severe than previous years and that hospitals are managing the patient load effectively.
In Sri Lanka, there is no cause for concern regarding this situation. Our health authorities are vigilant and continuously monitor global health developments to ensure public safety.
