Badulla – Colombo train derails

 

The train plying from Badulla to Colombo Fort was detailed this morning between Heel Oya and Bandarawela railway stations.

According to the Railways Department, the train that had derailed at 10.15 am, resulted in delays on the upcountry line.

Train derailments on the upcountry line were reported on several occasions in the past few weeks.

SDIG Ravi Seneviratne’s bail application rejected

The bail application submitted by former Senior DIG Ravi Seneviratne who had been on remand for driving under the influence of liquor and causing damage to two other vehicles was rejected by Mount Lavinia Additional Magistrate Sanjaya L.M. Wijesinghe.

He submitted the bail application through a special motion.

The retired Senior DIG was arrested by the Wellawatta police after he had caused damages to two vehicles parked in front of a hotel at Muhudu Mawatha in Wellawatta at about 1.20 am on Sunday (29).

A breathalyzer test had established that he was under the influence of liquor at the time of the accident.

12 trains cancelled over shortage of railway guards

Sri Lanka Railways says that they have been compelled to cancel several office trains scheduled for today (30) morning and evening due to the shortage of railway guards.

The department adds that a number of railway guards have not reported to duty since this morning.

Accordingly, a total of 12 trains including office trains which were scheduled to be operated this morning and evening have been cancelled so far.

August – September ‘Aswesuma’ payments in November

State Minister of Finance Shehan Semasinghe states that “Aswesuma” payments for the month of August will be credited to the beneficiary accounts on Wednesday (Nov. 01).

Meanwhile, the allowance for September will also be credited during the month of November, he said.

Semasinghe further expressed that the “Aswesuma” applicants who were not selected for the benefit scheme due to technical and management issues will be screened once again during “Aswesuma Week”, which is due to be held from Nov. 06 – 12 November.

Accordingly, the eligible individuals selected then will receive the benefits with effect from July 2023, the State Minister added.

He made these observations during a press conference held at the Presidential Media Centre today (30).
