The Opposition MPs yesterday disrupted Parliament sittings in protest against the government’s efforts to delay the local government polls. Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena adjourned Parliament sittings until today.

Members of the main Opposition SJB gathered in the Well of the House in front of Speaker Abeywardena, blocking his view of the Chamber. They carried placards demanding local government polls. They were supported by the SLPP dissidents.

The protesters surrounded the Speaker’s desk, chanting slogans.

Chief Opposition Whip and Kandy District SJB MP Lakshman Kiriella said that all government institutions must cooperate with the Election Commission to ensure the conduct of an election. “The officials who did not do so were liable to a three-year jail term. Today, the Secretary to the Ministry of Finance tells the Election Commission that he cannot allocate funds for the polls. The Government Printer is saying she cannot print ballot papers. The government has an obligation to provide the funds needed for the Election Commission,” he said.

Speaker Abeywardena said a party leaders’ meeting would be held yesterday, and adjourned the sessions.
