Police come under attack during operation to nab beggars
The police have launched a special operation yesterday (25) in search of those who beg in the streets of Colombo.
Accordingly, the police have arrested people who are begging on the roads, near traffic lights and near places of worship.The special operation was launched in Colombo and suburbs by the police and the Bureau for the Prevention of Abuse of Children and Women after it was reported that beggars were involved in various illegal activities.
The operation was launched in and around Kirulapana, Narahenpita, Rajagiriya, Borella, Battaramulla and Diyatha Uyana.The officers had taken into custody the people who were using school children in an unsafe manner to beg on the road.
It was reported that many beggars have fled during the operation while the police have to put great effort to arrest them and the police officers have also been attacked by the beggars.The Bureau for the Prevention of Abuse of Children and Women officials were able to take five children and two women into their custody.
Police investigations revealed that many people are not genuine beggars and they have used children to earn an income.The children who were taken into police custody have been placed on probation while the two women are to be produced in the Hulftsdorp Magistrate’s Court today (26).The police said that small children have been given drugs as well in order to carry out the begging scam smoothly.
