Mr. Sellampola Gedara Senarathna has been appointed as the new Deputy Chairman of the Public Utilities Commission with effect from March, 02.

The new appointment came following the resignation of  Mr. B. K. U. A. Wickramasinghe.

Tokens issued for farmers to get fuel donated from China

 

The Department of Agrarian Development has arranged to issue tokens to the farmers to provide fuel donated by the Chinese government.

The Chinese government has donated 6.98 million litres of diesel to be distributed to the farmers and the stocks were handed over to Sri Lankan authorities.

However, distribution activities have been delayed, inconveniencing farmers.

Speaking during a meeting with officials from the Agriculture ministry and the Department of Agrarian Development yesterday (March 01), Agriculture minister – Mahinda Amaraweera has urged officials to take immediate action to expedite distribution activities.

Accordingly, the Department of Agrarian Development had finished issuing tokens in 20 districts within yesterday night.

Speaking, Commissioner General of the Department of Agrarian Development – Mr. H.M.A.L. Abeyratne said that measures have been taken to finish issuing tokens to the remaining 05 districts within today.

Paddy farmers cultivating from 1/2 an acre – 2.5 acres are entitled to this fuel donation with 15 liters of diesel allotted per one hectare of land.

24-hr water cut for several areas in Colombo

 

A 24-hour water cut will be imposed from 02.00 pm on Saturday (March 04), the National Water Supply and Drainage Board (NWSDB) announced.

Accordingly, the water supply will be disrupted in the areas of Colombo 1-4 and 7-11 as well as in Kaduwela – Kollonnawa urban council areas and in Wellampitiya and Kotikawatte.

SL Rupee further appreciates

The Sri Lankan Rupee has further appreciated against the US dollar (USD) today (March 02), with the buying rate reaching Rs. 343.97 and the selling rate declared as Rs. 356.73.

The Sri Lankan Rupee yesterday (01 March) marked a record high against the USD, with the buying and selling rates dropping to Rs. 351.72 and Rs. 362.95, respectively.

The Central Bank of Sri Lanka (CBSL) had reported that this was the lowest rupee value against the USD since 04 May 2022.
The Sri Lankan Rupee also appreciated against the Euro, the Pound Sterling, the Australian Dollar, the Indian Rupee, the Canadian Dollar and the Japanese Yen.
