RANIL WICKRAMASINGHE ELECTED PRESIDENT WITH HUGE MAJORITY IN SECRET VOTING OVER DULLAS AND ANURA, PLEDGES TO END DIVISION AMONG PARTIES

Time that we remained divided has ended – President-elect

President-elect Ranil Wickremesinghe says the time they had remained divided has now ended.

Addressing parliament shortly after winning the Presidential vote earlier today, Mr. Wickremesinghe invited all political leaders to join him for talks to formulate a new programme that will ensure the country’s way forward.

The President-elect also said the public does not want old politics and therefore Parliament must unite and work towards specific goals.

Noting that he had Speaker of House Mahinda Yapa Abeywardana both commenced their political careers together in 1973, Mr. Wickremesinghe said that it brings him joy that his victory was announced by the Speaker due to this fact.

The President-elect also sought the Speaker’s permission to swear in at the Parliament Complex but outside the Chamber itself.

Mr. Wickremesinghe’s speech was made in Sinhala
