Maldivian among 06 arrested in SL over attack plot
The Terrorism Investigation Division informed the Colombo Magistrate’s Court that two more suspects have been arrested on suspicion of planning an attack within the country, targeting areas frequented by tourists, at the behest of foreign terrorist organizations.
Detectives reported to the court that, under the orders of the Minister of Defense, the suspects are being held for further questioning under a 90-day detention order.
A confidential report on further investigations related to the Arugam Bay incident was presented to Additional Magistrate Pasan Amarasekara by the officers of the Terrorist Investigation Division of the Criminal Investigation Department.
The suspects were arrested under the provisions of the Prevention of Terrorism Act, and the detectives requested the magistrate’s permission to continue further investigations.
The detectives submitted these details while filing a special motion related to the case concerning the planned terrorist attack targeting a region heavily populated by foreign tourists.
After reviewing the details and the special report submitted by the Terrorist Investigation Division, the Additional Magistrate ordered the detectives to present the progress of the investigations to the court in due course and placed the investigation file on record.
Meanwhile, Deputy Inspector General of Police and Police Spokesperson, Attorney-at-Law Nihal Thalduwa stated that six suspects have been arrested so far in connection with the Arugam Bay incident.
The Police Spokesperson also mentioned that a Maldivian national was arrested on Monday (28) and that the suspects are being detained and questioned under detention orders.
