False news warning : SJB condemns Minister’s ‘Threat’
The Samagi Jana Balavegaya (SJB), Sri Lanka’s main opposition party, has condemned an alleged threat issued by Media Minister Dr. Nalinda Jayathissa to a local newspaper accused of publishing false news targeting the government.
The controversy arose after a newspaper owned by MP Dilith Jayaweera received a stern warning from the government over reports deemed misleading concerning the ‘Clean Sri Lanka’ national programme.
Speaking to the media yesterday, Minister Jayathissa stated that while the government upholds freedom of expression, it also holds the responsibility to act against persistent unethical media practices.
“Unethical media practices cannot be allowed. The government is committed to protecting freedom of expression but will take necessary action when such practices are continuous,” the minister said.
The opposition, however, views this as a direct threat to media freedom, raising concerns about the government’s approach to managing criticism and dissent in the press.
