National Hospital nurse sells Rs.8mn worth hospital medicine

The Health Ministry and the Maradana Police have launched investigations into an incident where a special grade nurse has sold a stock of medicinal drugs worth Rs.8 million belonging to the Colombo National Hospital to private sector pharmacies.The hospital administration had received complaints that there was a daily shortage of medicines in several wards of the National Hospital.

The health authorities who paid attention to these complaints have informed the officials of the Auditor General’s Department about the issue.

After interrogating a minor employee, the Auditor General’s Department officials were able to discover the smuggling and the Health Ministry has also taken steps to suspend the service of the special grade nurse who is the main suspect of the medicinal drug trafficking racket.

The Ministry has also appointed a three-member committee to investigate the incident.

The police are also looking into the private pharmacies that purchased this stock of medicines.
