STATION MASTERS’ UNION WARNS OF CANCELLATION OF TRAINS

More than 60 trains may get canceled tomorrow” – Station Masters’ Union

The Railway Station Masters’ Union warns that more than 60 trains may get canceled tomorrow (02).

The issue is caused by the retirement of nearly 500 railway employees from the total workforce since 31st December 2022.

“Yesterday, 44 train journeys were scheduled to be cancelled. So far, 7 journeys have been cancelled. It is likely to double or triple. Tomorrow it may be 60 to 70” Chairman of the Railway Station Masters’ Union Sumedha Somaratne said.

He further warned that conflicts may occur as passengers will come to train stations tomorrow and demand trains to operate.

“We can definitely say that this situation will arise on the first day of the month – On the first day of the year. Passengers going to workplaces will be severely affected” he further warned.

He went on to add that Provision to obtain the services of the retired employees on contract basis as required has not been done so far.

“Also, although new station masters have been recruited to overcome the shortage of station masters, their positions have not been confirmed. Due to this, railway stations between Matara and Beliatta may have to be shut down in the near future” he went on to add.

He further added that if no solution is provided to the problems within the upcoming week, the station masters would launch a strike action.
