Reveal those who got liquor licenses before Prez Poll – Sumanthiran
Former MP and Ilankai Tamil Arasu Katchi (ITAK) Spokesperson, M. A. Sumanthiran yesterday urged the government to immediately reveal the names of former MPs and politicians who were involved in obtaining and distributing liquor licenses during the previous regime.
He also pointed out the need for transparency especially in view of the current controversial situation regarding the proliferation of liquor stores across the country.
He said this while attending a press conference held in Colombo yesterday. He also requested the government to release the list of persons responsible for recommending the opening of these liquor stores.
“There is a serious problem regarding liquor stores across the country. The public should know which members of Parliament or politicians recommended these licences. This should be made public before the next election. Then the people involved can be removed from their positions in the future.
The increase in liquor outlets has created a significant social problem with negative effects on the young generation.
Politicians and individuals who secretly facilitated the expansion of liquor stores should be brought to the public. There is information that some people have profited by selling liquor licenses for financial gain. Especially during the current economic crisis. there have been excessive perks given to Parliamentarians, which are unnecessary.
We offer our full support in reducing these excess benefits. It is not appropriate for members of parliament to enjoy such privileges in times of financial difficulties. We give our part’s support for reducing perks, stating that it is crucial to reduce unnecessary benefits and promote transparency in governance.
He also said that his party will introduce new young faces regarding the nomination process for the upcoming general election. Especially women need to be encouraged for candidacy,” he added.
