Traders refuse payment for essential goods  in Indian rupees

Some suppliers have refused to use the Indian loan facility to clear 1500 containers of essential food items imported from India to Sri Lanka which are currently stranded at the port, it is reported.

Some suppliers are demanding that they be paid in US Dollars and not Indian Rupees.

The Government of Sri Lanka has recently signed a loan facility agreement with the Government of India to import food items and medicines from India.

Accordingly, the government had decided to use that credit facility to clear the goods imported from India.
