FIFA upholds suspension of Sri Lanka
Zimbabwe and Sri Lanka were today (16) suspended from voting during FIFA elections.
This was as close to 2,000 delegates including top football executives from world football governing body (FIFA) met in Kigali for the long-awaited 73rd FIFA Congress. The FIFA Congress, the supreme legislative body of FIFA, brings together top executives from FIFA, confederations and representatives from 211-member associations and other football stakeholders.
Of the 211 associations, 199 member associations voted in favour of a motion to suspend Zimbabwe. The Congress said that since the Zimbabwe federation didn’t fulfill the request to lift the suspension, which violates FIFA statutes, it recommended once again that the suspension be reinstated.
The congress also voted 197 votes for the suspension of the Sri Lanka Football Federation.
This means that none of the above countries will have a right to vote nor its membership rights at the congress until they work on lifting the suspension.
In January, FIFA suspended the Football Federation of Sri Lanka (FFSL) over political interference after the federation’s presidential elections fell short of Zurich’s standards.
Meanwhile, Gianni Infantino was re-elected as president of FIFA until 2027 after standing unopposed at the 73rd congress of world football’s governing body in Kigali on Thursday.

Samagi Jana Balawega (SJB) Media Spokesman – S.M. Marikkar states that the President’s Media Division (PMD) unsuccessfully attempted to portray that the strike of the professionals was unsuccessful.
Speaking at a media briefing at the party headquarters in Pita Kotte, he said that although the PMD issued a string of news alerts on the status of the public transport and banking sector during the strike, they had failed to see how helpless the people have become.
He also pointed out that the PMD which issued news alerts when the dollar depreciated, failed to do the same when the dollar appreciated.
Further saying that the issue in the country is not a war of propaganda, Mr. Marikkar also requested the government to understand the real problems of the people and act accordingly.

The King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Center of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia donated 50 tonnes of dates to Sri Lanka.
Ambassador of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia to Sri Lanka – Mr. Khalid Hamoud Alkahtani officially handed over this consignment of dates to Minister of Buddha Sasana, Religious and Cultural Affairs – Vidura Wickremanayake during a ceremony held at the Embassy of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia in Colombo, today (16).
The Ambassador praised the humanitarian efforts of the King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Center around the world while noting the strong relations between the two countries.
Minister Vidura Wickremanayake also extended his sincere thanks to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia for all the assistance provided to the Sri Lankan people, indicating that this is not surprising from the Kingdom’s humanity and its generosity that have provided unlimited in all parts of the globe.
