THE POLICE WOULD BE UNDERSTAFFED IN THE FUTURE

Police force to go understaffed.

It is likely that police stations could face becoming largely understaffed in the near future, reports from the police headquarters say.

This is due to many taking the 5-year no-pay leave offered to the state sector to go abroad as well as due to the fact that a large number of police officers are to retire  next year. The police force is facing a large number of vacancies after recruitments were halted in the last two years due to the pandemic, reports add.

At the moment, the 85,000 strong police force will see over 5,000 officers retiring next year and a significant number leaving for overseas by taking up the 5-year leave. However, Police Media Spokesman SSP Nihal Thalduwa says that steps are being taken to prevent the police force from being understaffed.
