Mujeeb urges President to halt deportation of Rohingya refugees
Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) MP Mujeebur Rahuman has appealed to President Anura Dissanayake to reconsider the government’s decision to deport 103 Rohingya refugees, including over 40 children, who were rescued off the Mullaitivu coast on December 19.
In a letter, Rahuman expressed concern that returning the refugees to Myanmar would endanger their lives and violate international non-refoulement principles, which prohibit sending individuals to a country where they face threats of persecution. He urged the President to demonstrate Sri Lanka’s commitment to human rights and racial harmony by ensuring the refugees’ safety until they can be resettled in a secure country.
Rahuman highlighted the opportunity for Sri Lanka to showcase compassion and hospitality, aligning with global human rights standards. (NewsWire)
