TO PRIVATIZE RAILWAYS’ NO NECESSITY

There’s is no need to privatize Sri Lanka Railways’
The Sri Lanka Railway Station Masters Association reiterates that they are not opposed to increasing train fares by 100%.

President Sumedha Somaratne speaking at a media briefing today said certain train categories have however been increased by 200% and condemned such efforts. He said commuters will stop taking trains if fares are increased by such high proportions.

Somaratne said increasing the Rs.10 ticket to Rs.20 is justified given the fuel price hikes and in order to cover the losses incurred by Sri Lanka Railways.

He noted that trains meet majority of the country’s transport requirement, while the train service must be improved and fares must be maintained at reasonable levels.

He claimed that the Association tabled many proposals to generate an income for the Railways Department.
