Two-week grace period to remove illegal vehicle installations
A two-week grace period has been granted to remove illegal installations from vehicles, with a deadline set for January 19.
The initiative, in line with the ‘Clean Sri Lanka’ project, will be launched to educate drivers and the public during this period.
Police have called for the removal of illegal modifications, including additional lights with varying tones or colors, loud horns, and noisy silencers, which contribute to hazardous driving conditions and accidents.
Meanwhile, a second initiative involves deploying plainclothes officers to identify traffic violations by public transport bus drivers and enforce the law accordingly.
However, private bus owners have expressed concerns, cautioning police to adhere to the Motor Traffic Act and avoid measures that could lead to a bus strike.
Chairman of the Lanka Private Bus Owners’ Association – Gemunu Wijeratne has said that discussions with the Acting Inspector General of Police are planned for next week, during which the union will address its grievances. A strike initially set for next week has been temporarily suspended pending the outcome of the talks.
