Defense Secretary summoned to HRCSL over Army officer’s kick!

The Human Rights Commission of Sri Lanka (HRCSL) has made an inquiry from the Defense Secretary General Kamal Gunaratne (retired) regarding the recent incident where an army officer had kicked a person at the Kurunegala Yakgahapitiya petrol station.

The HRC said that the Defense Secretary had reported to the Commission yesterday (05) in response to a notice sent by the HRCSL Chairperson.

The Defence Secretary had told the HRCSL that he condemns such behavior and that a high level investigation had commenced by the army regarding the incident.

General Gunaratne had also notified the Commission that measures will be taken to ensure that such incidents are not repeated.

In view of the situation in the country, the Chairperson of the HRCSL had informed the Secretary of Defense to instruct the military officials to maintain law and order and to ensure that such incidents do not occur again, even if the people act in a provocative manner, the commission sources added.
