SLAF training aircraft crashes, killing 2
A training aircraft that took off from the China Bay Airport in Trincomalee has crashed, killing both the Sri Lanka Air Force personnel onboard.
The Sri Lanka Air Force (SLAF) confirmed that the crashed plane is a PT6 aircraft used to train pilots at the No 1 Flying Training Wing in SLAF Academy China Bay, that had taken off from the China Bay airstrip this morning (07) for an air test.
However, the aircraft had crashed in the vicinity of the SLAF Camp in China Bay around 11.27 am.
The SLAF Commander Air Marshal Udeni Rajapaksa has appointed a special investigation committee for further investigations into the accident.

Sri Lankan student – R.S. Kasmira Jayaweera has won the the ‘Most Peaceful Prize’ for her eloquent presentation on peace-building at the 4th Children’s World Peace Summit held in Tokyo last Tuesday.
Kasmira is a Grade 12 student at the Bandaranayake Central College, Veyangoda.
At this year’s Children’s World Peace Summit, more than 200 ideas for creating peace were submitted from 20 countries, and 12 child representatives were selected from among them to give speeches at the International Conference Hall of the House of Representatives.
Sri Lankan Ambassador E. Rodney M. Perera, along with Embassy staff, congratulated Kasmira.
Kasmira Jayaweera was selected from Sri Lanka to be amongst the 12 youth representatives from all over the world who delivered speeches on their ideas to create world peace. The theme of Jayaweera’s speech was ‘Listening to other people, learning and realizing the reality of the world and life’. Other child representatives delivering speeches were from Japan, Nepal, France, Lithuania, Malaysia, USA, and Cote d Ivoire.
Following her victory, Kasmira also sought blessings of Ven. Banagala Upatissa Thero – who is the President of Mahabodhi Society of Sri Lanka, Chief Sangha Nayaka of Japan and the Chief Priest-Lankaji Temple, Japan.
Police have arrested 04 officers of the Excise Department over a shooting incident this evening (07).
According to the police, a group in a van had allegedly opened fire at a SUV near a fuel station at Marine-Drive in Bambalapitiya and both vehicles fleeing after several shots had hit the SUV.
Police had enacted road barriers and the van was stopped at Wellawatta. Police had discovered those in the van were excise officers, who had opened fire at the SUV, suspecting that its occupants were drug traffickers.
The Food and Agriculture Organization has delivered 8,360 metric tonnes of Japanese funded urea fertilizer this week to the Ministry of Agriculture for distribution during the forthcoming Maha cropping season.
The essential fertilizer will be distributed to over 228,000 smallholder paddy farmers across several districts in dry and intermediate zones of Sri Lanka, bolstering production and increasing the resilience of smallholder paddy farmers in the country.
The assistance targets smallholder paddy farmers cultivating lands up to one hectare in Kurunegala, Jaffna, Kilinochchi, Mullaitivu, Mannar, Vavuniya, Trincomalee, and Batticaloa, districts.
Under this emergency assistance programme, farmers cultivating up to 0.5 hectares of land will receive 25 kg of urea fertilizer free of charge, while those cultivating up to 1 hectare of land will receive 50 kg of urea, also provided at no cost to the farmers.
Mr. Mahinda Amaraweera, the Minister of Agriculture in Sri Lanka, emphasized the significance of this support in advancing the country’s agricultural goals, saying, “The arrival of this urea fertilizer will support Sri Lanka’s steady recovery. By addressing the needs of our farmers, we are fostering the growth of a more resilient and prosperous agricultural sector. I thank the government of Japan and the Japanese people for this valuable aid to the small holder paddy farmers of Sri Lanka”
Mr. Mizukoshi Hideaki, the Japanese Ambassador, expressed Japan’s commitment to supporting Sri Lanka’s agricultural sector and stated, “We are delighted to be a part of this collaborative effort with FAO and the government of Sri Lanka. Our shared vision of empowering smallholder farmers through sustainable practices aligns well with this initiative. We believe this assistance will significantly contribute to the betterment of Sri Lanka’s farming communities.”
