VAJIRA CHITRASENA VETERAN DANCE ARTISTE AND GURU BIDS ADIEU AT 92

Veteran dance artiste and guru Vajira Chitrasena bids adieu

Veteran Sri Lankan traditional dancer, choreographer and teacher, Deshamanya Dr. Vajira Chitrasena has passed away at the age of 92.

According to the Chitrasena Dance Company, her remains will lie at the Jayaratne “RESTPECT” Funeral parlour, Colombo 08, from 10.00am – 6.00pm tomorrow (Sep. 24) and final rites are to take place on Sep. 25 at 11.30am on Sep. 25 at the New Crematorium, Borella Cemetery.

Making her debut as soloist in the role of Prakriti in the ballet ‘Chandali’ in 1952, Mrs. Vajira and her husband Chitrasena had influenced generations of dancers and have long been renowned internationally for their contributions in the field of arts.

She was announced as an honorable recipient of the prestigious Padma Shri award for her achievement in arts in January 2020 and the award was given by Indian President Ram Nath Govind during the Padma Awards Investiture Ceremony which was held on Nov. 08, 2021.
