Sri Lanka monitoring new virus spreading in China
The Epidemiology Unit of the Ministry of Health says attention is being paid to the virus that is currently reported to be spreading across China.
Having received information in this regard today (Jan 03), the Epidemiology Unit said it will brief the media after conducting a proper study.
Foreign media has reported China is witnessing a surge in human metapneumovirus (HMPV) cases, sparking concerns of another health crisis five years after COVID-19 pandemic.
Reports and social media posts show overcrowded hospitals, with some users also suggesting the presence of multiple viruses such as HMPV, influenza A, Mycoplasma pneumoniae and even COVID-19.
HMPV causes flu-like symptoms and can lead to severe respiratory issues, especially among children and vulnerable groups.
How does HMPV spread?
HMPV spreads in ways similar to other respiratory viruses. Transmission occurs through:
Secretions from coughing and sneezing
Close personal contact, such as shaking hands or touching
