How will the new Speaker be appointed?
A Speaker’s resignation becomes constitutionally valid once it is formally submitted and accepted by the President, setting the stage for the selection of a new Speaker.
According to Standing Order 6/1, once the Secretary General of Parliament is informed of the resignation, the appointment of a new Speaker will take place at the next sitting of Parliament, Deputy Secretary General Chaminda Kularatne said.
Standing Orders of Parliament state that whenever a vacancy arises in the office of the Speaker, Parliament must elect a new Speaker at its first meeting following the vacancy.
Parliament is scheduled to convene on December 17 and 18 where it is likely that a new Speaker will be appointed.
